Every student gets a block of excavation material with six sealed compartments. A real rock or mineral is buried in each one. Their job is to get it out.
They chip. They brush. They find something.
Then they work out what it is. Six specimen cards come in the kit — one for each find, with the name, how it formed, and how to tell it apart from the thing sitting next to it. Match the card to the specimen and it's theirs to keep.

Specimens are drawn from a much larger set, so the student beside you dug up something different. That's deliberate. Comparing, trading and hunting for the one you're missing is half of what makes a rock collection worth having.

- Grades K–5. Younger students dig and match; older students work the identification.
