How to Make DIY Dinosaur Dig Kits: A Step-by-Step Guide
In this section, we'll dive into the exciting world of DIY dinosaur birthday party dig kits!
These kits are the perfect addition to any dinosaur themed party, providing kids with an engaging and interactive activity that will have them feeling like real paleontologists.
Not only are these kits easy and inexpensive to make, but they also offer endless opportunities for customization, allowing you to tailor them to your party theme and personal preferences.
With a variety of materials and directions, you can create kits that include toy dinosaurs, real fossils, and more! So get ready to embark on a prehistoric adventure and let's get started on making these amazing DIY dinosaur dig kits!
- Plaster of Paris
- Mixing bowl
- Wooden spoon
- Measuring cups
- Plastic toy dinosaur or real fossils
- Small containers to pour an excavation for each birthday party guest. I like to use 2oz to 4oz condiment cups. It also makes it easier to distribute the digs if you have lids for the condiment cups. No matter what container you choose, you can decorate it with dinosaur stickers to add to the overall dinosaur birthday party theme.
- Optional - Colored sand, small gravel (colored aquarium gravel is really cool!), or some other material to sprinkle across your excavation to give your excavation a little character. You can even use gold glitter (biodegradable kind if available) to make the gem mining excavation really sparkle.
- Excavation tools for each guest. Wooden dowels and other blunt instruments work well. Sharp tools are unsafe and not necessary as the excavations are reasonably brittle and excavate easily.
- Safety goggles for each guest
- Small brushes for each guest
- Optional - If you are adding real fossils, magnifying glasses are great to hand out. One or two magnifying glasses is usually enough for the guests to share.
- Put one cup of sand in your mixing bowl.
- Add one-third cup Plaster of Paris.
- Use the wooden spoon to mix the sand and Plaster of Paris.
- Add one-third cup of water and mix.
- Keep adding small amounts of water until you reach a pancake like batter consistency.
- Scale the recipe up if more mixture is needed to fill your chosen containers.
- Add your dinosaurs or fossils to your container.
- Pour a layer of the mixture into the container to cover the items.
- Gently tap the sides of the container to remove any air bubbles. This will also allow a little mixture under and around the items. If you use plastic toy dinosaurs, they may float to the surface of the dig while the mixture is still wet. Simply allow the mixture to set for a minute or two and push the dinosaur back below the surface of the dig.
- Optional - sprinkle the colored sand, glitter, or gravel across the wet surface of the dinosaur digs.
- Set the dinosaur digs in a safe location to dry undisturbed overnight. I like to put the excavations in front of a fan.
Once it is time for the party, setup an area that is easy to clean up, distribute the safety goggles, and excavation tools, and let the dinosaur digging begin.
