Fossil Preservation: Amber, Minerals & Ice
Amber Falls froze in mid-pour with insects hanging inside it — one of three ways an ancient thing survives to be found. Sorting the ways gets the falls running again.
What you're training for
At Amber Falls, a waterfall of tree resin has set hard as glass. It pours again for whoever can sort every find into the way it was preserved. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.
The science
- Amber is tree resin turned hard — it can trap a whole small animal, down to its wings and legs.
- Mineral replacement: bone and wood are usually preserved when minerals fill or replace them bit by bit — petrified logs and stone dinosaur bones.
- Freezing: frozen ground can keep an entire body — skin, hair and all — for thousands of years, like the mammoths.
- Fossilization is rare: most living things rot completely. Every fossil is a lucky accident of fast burial, resin or cold.
