Constellations & the North Star
The Star Ceiling's patterns have been shuffled — and every route out of the cavern is drawn from those patterns, the way sailors once steered whole oceans by them.
What you're training for
Under the Star Ceiling, the sky has been pulled apart. It settles for whoever can match each star pattern to how it looks. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.
The science
- A constellation is a pattern people picked out of the stars — a connect-the-dots drawn on the sky.
- The famous shapes: Orion's three-star belt, Cassiopeia's W, and the Big Dipper's ladle with a long handle.
- Polaris, the North Star, sits almost exactly above the North Pole — so it barely moves while the whole sky wheels around it.
- The Dipper's two front bowl stars point straight to Polaris — the oldest navigation trick in the northern sky.
Teach it today — a flashlight and a paper cup
The classroom planetarium. Poke each constellation into the bottom of a paper cup with a pin, lights off, flashlight through the cup — the pattern lands on the ceiling. Students learn Orion, Cassiopeia and the Dipper by projecting them, then use the Dipper's pointer stars to find their "Polaris" on the classroom ceiling.
