Firefly Hollow should be full of drifting green flashes — but lamps are blazing on every side, and the fireflies can't get a word in. One change brings them back tonight.
What you're training for
In Firefly Hollow, not one firefly is lighting up. They return for whoever can pick the change a habitat actually needs. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.
The science
- Fireflies talk to each other in flashes of light — every blink is a message.
- Bright artificial light drowns out those signals — scientists call it light pollution, and it can silence a whole meadow.
- Fireflies also need long, damp grass to live in — mow it short or drain it and the habitat is gone even with the lights off.
- The conservation lesson in miniature: protecting an animal means protecting what it needs, and the fix is often as simple as turning something off.
Teach it today — no prep
The signal game. Lights off. A few students are fireflies with small lights (phone lights work), flashing a pattern their "mate" must find across the room. Easy. Now flood the room with the classroom lights and try again — the signals vanish into the glare. That's light pollution, felt firsthand. Finish by designing a firefly-friendly backyard.
