Watersheds

The river has stopped dead behind the Boulder Garden and is spreading sideways across the flat. Water only goes one direction — downhill, joining up as it goes — and showing it the route is the fix.

What you're training for

At Boulder Garden, the channel is blocked. The river finds its way for whoever can trace the water's route from hilltop to sea, in order. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.

The science

  • A watershed is all the land that drains into one river — every backyard, field and parking lot included.
  • The route is always the same: rain lands high → runs into trickles → trickles join into creeks → creeks join the river → the river reaches the sea.
  • Ridgelines are the borders: rain falling one side of a divide ends up in a different river entirely.
  • Everyone lives in a watershed — which means everything the land sheds, the river receives.

The crumpled watershed. Crumple a sheet of paper, open it halfway — instant mountain range. Trace the ridgelines in marker, then mist it with a spray bottle and watch the "rain" find the valleys, join up, and drain to the low edges. Students just watched a watershed organize itself.
