The Water Cycle
Ribbon Rapids is running uphill — the whole river has been flipped. Water moves in an order, and setting the cycle the right way round is the only fix.
What you're training for
At Ribbon Rapids, spray is going up instead of coming down. The rapids turn over for whoever can run the water cycle in order, starting at the sun. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.
The science
- Evaporation: the sun lifts water into the air as invisible vapour.
- Condensation: the vapour cools and gathers into cloud droplets.
- Precipitation: the droplets fall as rain or snow.
- Collection: water gathers and runs downhill — and the sun starts the loop again. It's a cycle with no beginning: the water in today's rain has been through it billions of times, dinosaurs included.
Teach it today — one sandwich bag
The window water cycle. A splash of water (blue food coloring optional) in a zip-top bag, taped to a sunny window. By afternoon: droplets condensing at the top, "raining" back down the sides. The whole cycle, running on the classroom window for a week, labelled by the students who own it.
