The Rock Cycle

The Marble Hall folded shut under pressure — literally. To unfold it, you have to know what marble was before the mountain changed it.

What you're training for

In the Marble Hall, the walls have been squeezed shut like a ribbon. The hall only unfolds for someone who can trace marble back to the rock it used to be. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.

The science

  • No rock stays what it is forever. Melt and cool → igneous. Weather, erode, deposit, press → sedimentary. Heat and squeeze without melting → metamorphic.
  • Before-and-after pairs worth knowing by name: limestone → marble, shale → slate, sandstone → quartzite.
  • The cycle has no fixed direction — any rock can take any path, over millions of years.
  • Marble started as limestone: a soft, shelly seafloor rock, changed by the weight and heat of a mountain sitting on it.
