Wind & Its Strength

The wind in the Howling Tunnels is screaming so loud nobody can hear the plan. Storm chasers read wind by watching what it moves — and that's a skill you can train.

What you're training for

In the Howling Tunnels, the wind has been cranked all the way up. It drops to a hum for whoever can rank winds from gentlest to strongest. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.

The science

  • Wind is moving air — you can't see it, but you can always see what it does.
  • Read the clues in order: calm — smoke goes straight up; breeze — leaves rustle; strong wind — big branches sway; gale — whole trees bend.
  • Sailors have used this trick for two hundred years — it's called the Beaufort scale, and it needs no instrument at all.
  • Wind happens because the sun heats the ground unevenly — warm air rises, cooler air rushes in, and that rush is the wind.

Teach it today — no prep

The window forecast. Look outside: what is the wind moving right now — nothing, leaves, branches, whole trees? The class agrees on a strength and logs it. Do it daily for a week and a wind record appears. Add a paper pinwheel per student and the classroom has instruments by Friday.
