Precipitation
Stones of ice are falling out of the ceiling of Hailstone Hollow. Not everything a cloud drops is ice — sorting what falls as water from what falls as ice is the way out.
What you're training for
In Hailstone Hollow, ice is bouncing off the rock and piling in the corners. The barrage stops for whoever can sort every kind of precipitation correctly. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.
The science
- Falls as water: rain and drizzle — liquid all the way down.
- Falls as ice: snow (crystals grown in cold clouds), sleet (tiny frozen pellets), and hail.
- Hail rides an elevator: a raindrop gets carried up into the freezing top of a storm cloud, freezes, falls, gets carried up again — adding a layer of ice each ride until it's too heavy to lift.
- Cut a big hailstone open and you can count its rides, like tree rings.
Teach it today — no prep
Build a hailstone. One student is the raindrop; the class is the updraft. Each trip "up" (a lap of the room), the drop picks up a layer — a sticky note stuck on. Three rides, three layers, too heavy — down it comes. Then draw the hailstone in cross-section, rings labelled. Weather that works like a story.
