Seismic Waves
The Shivering Bridge won't stop shaking — but quake waves always arrive in the same order. Call them as they come and you can time your run across.
What you're training for
On the Shivering Bridge, a new set of waves runs through every few seconds. Crossing safely means knowing the arrival order cold. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.
The science
- P waves travel fastest and arrive first — a sharp push-pull jolt.
- S waves come next, shaking the ground side to side.
- Surface waves arrive last and shake the hardest — they do most of the damage.
- The gap between the P and S arrivals tells scientists how far away the quake was — it's how epicenters get located.
Teach it today — one slinky
Slinky seismology. Stretch a slinky across the floor between two students. Push one end sharply forward — the compression racing through is a P wave. Now flick the end side to side — that slower snake is an S wave. Then the whole class stands and does "the wave" — a surface wave, biggest of all. Order it: P, S, surface.
