Plate Boundaries

The floor of the Realm is stone slabs tipped out of true — and they only lie flat again when they're grouped the way Earth's real plates move. There are only three ways.

What you're training for

At the Tilting Slabs, every slab slides out from underfoot. The floor levels for whoever can sort each scene into the three plate motions. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.

The science

  • Earth's crust is cracked into plates that ride slowly on the hot rock beneath — about as fast as your fingernails grow.
  • Pulling apart: new sea floor opens along ridges; Iceland is literally splitting down the middle.
  • Crashing together: one plate dives under another, or the crust crumples upward into mountains — the Himalayas are a head-on collision in slow motion.
  • Grinding past: two plates scrape sideways, sticking and slipping — the San Andreas Fault. All three motions make earthquakes.

Teach it today — crackers and frosting

Graham-cracker plates. Frosting on a plate is the mantle; two graham crackers are plates. Push them together (watch the edges crumple), pull them apart (frosting rises — new crust), and grind them past each other (feel them stick and jump: that jump is an earthquake). Three boundaries, one snack.
