Meteoroids, Meteors & Meteorites

The Asteroid Run won't steady until every rock carries its right name — and space rock gets three different names depending on where it is.

What you're training for

On the Asteroid Run, the belt is cracking together hard enough to throw sparks. It settles into a drift for whoever never mixes the three names up. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.

The science

  • Meteoroid: a rock still out in space — a boulder in the belt, a pebble drifting between planets.
  • Meteor: the streak of light it makes burning through our air — the "shooting star" that isn't a star at all.
  • Meteorite: the piece that survives the burn and lands — like the Campo del Cielo irons in museum cases.
  • The trick to remember: -oid is outside, -or is on fire, -ite is on the ground. Same rock, three chapters of one journey.

Teach it today — no prep

The three-zone journey. Divide the room: space, atmosphere, ground. A student carries the "rock" through all three, and the class renames it at each border — meteoroid! meteor! meteorite! — with the meteor sprinting its zone, because the burn is fast. Ten crossings and the words are permanent.

Resources in this training center

Worksheets, reading passages, flashcards and printables for this lesson are being added — new resources land here first. Get one email a month when they do, or browse the whole free library.

The hands-on half: the Outer Space Odyssey Adventure Kit puts six real specimens in your students' hands — including a genuine Campo del Cielo meteorite, a rock that fell from space. $19.99, or $15 a student for classrooms.
