The Red Surface has gone up in a dust storm, and it won't settle until every feature is credited to the force that carved it. Three forces shaped Mars — wind, impacts and volcanoes.
What you're training for
On the Red Surface, grit is settling into every seam of your suit. The storm thins for whoever can sort dunes, craters and lava plains under the forces that made them. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.
The science
- Mars is red because its dust is full of iron oxide — rust. The planet is literally rusty.
- Wind built the dunes and draws dust-devil tracks across the plains.
- Impacts punched the craters and sprayed bright rays of ejecta around them.
- Volcanoes — long dead — poured the lava plains and raised Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system, nearly three times the height of Everest.
Teach it today — no prep
Rover geologist. Put real rover photos on the screen — a dune field, a crater, a lava plain — and make students claim the force with evidence: "wind, because…" It's exactly how NASA scientists read a surface they can never visit.
