Why Lava Glows
The chamber that lights the way home has gone dark. Relighting it takes the one fact almost everyone gets wrong: lava is not on fire.
What you're training for
In the Green Fire Chamber, the last of the heat is in the floor and the doorway is lost in the dark. The chamber relights for whoever knows why melted rock shines in the first place. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.
The science
- Lava is not burning. There's no flame and nothing being consumed.
- It glows because it is hot — rock has to reach around 1,000°C to flow like that, and anything that hot gives off its own light. Scientists call it incandescence.
- The color reads the temperature: dull red is cooler, bright orange hotter, yellow-white hottest of all.
- The same physics lights a toaster element, a blacksmith's iron and the old-fashioned light bulb — hot things glow.
Teach it today — no prep
Hot things glow. Show photos (or the real thing, from a safe distance): a toaster element, glowing charcoal, a blacksmith's iron, flowing lava. What do they have in common — and which is on fire? None of them. Then hand out lava photos and have students rank them hottest to coolest by color alone, like volcanologists do.
