Igneous Rocks & Cooling Speed

Lava Falls chilled into a sheet of black glass because it cooled too fast. How fast melted rock cools decides everything about what it becomes.

What you're training for

At Lava Falls, the falls have frozen mid-drop into obsidian glass. The sheet lets go for whoever can match each igneous rock to how it was made. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.

The science

  • Obsidian cooled so fast it turned to glass — no time for crystals at all.
  • Basalt cooled quickly on the surface: crystals formed, but too small to see.
  • Granite cooled slowly underground, growing crystals big enough to pick out by eye.
  • Pumice froze so full of gas bubbles that it floats — the only rock that does.

Teach it today — the candy version

Fast candy, slow candy. Hard candy is sugar cooled fast — smooth, glassy, no crystals: that's obsidian. Rock candy is sugar cooled slowly over days — big visible crystals: that's granite. Pass both around and let students state the rule themselves: slow cooling grows big crystals.
