Fossil Bone & the Mineral That Glows

The Glow Bed holds hundreds of fossils in pitch darkness. Lighting it takes knowing what bone is actually made of — because under UV, that mineral answers back.

What you're training for

In the Glow Bed, the crew is walking blind over a floor of fossils. The bed lights up for whoever can name the mineral that bones and teeth are built from. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.

The science

  • Bones and teeth are built from apatite — a real mineral (calcium phosphate), the same family as specimens in a rock collection.
  • That's why bone fossilizes so well: it's already half mineral before burial even starts.
  • Fossil bone often still holds its apatite, and under ultraviolet light it can fluoresce — collectors use UV lamps to spot bone fragments in the field at night.
  • Tooth enamel is the hardest substance a body makes — which is why teeth are among the most common fossils of all.
