Earth's Layers & Magnetism

Every compass in the Compass Chamber is spinning. A compass points north because of what's under our feet — set the layers in order and the needles settle.

What you're training for

In the Compass Chamber, lodestone veins have every needle confused. They settle for whoever can order Earth's layers from the outside in. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.

The science

  • From outside in: crust (thin rocky skin), mantle (hot rock flowing very slowly), outer core (liquid metal), inner core (solid metal).
  • The churning liquid outer core is what makes Earth a giant magnet — no liquid metal, no compass.
  • Lodestone (magnetite) is naturally magnetic rock — the mineral the first compasses were made from.
  • The field does real work: it deflects solar particles, and where they funnel in at the poles, they light the aurora.

Teach it today — one magnet, one compass

Confuse the needle. Set a compass on the table — it finds north. Slide a bar magnet nearby — the needle swings to obey the closer, stronger field. Now the question that lands the lesson: what does that make the Earth? A magnet so large the needle obeys it from everywhere — powered by liquid metal thousands of miles down.
