Earth's Records
The Glowworm Ceiling used to hold the whole Realm as a map of lights — one for every record chamber. Highest, lowest, coldest: put each record where it belongs and the ceiling comes back on.
What you're training for
Under the Glowworm Ceiling, the map of lights is dead black. It relights point by point for whoever can sort Earth's record-holders. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.
The science
- Highest: Mount Everest, 8,849 m above sea level — though Mauna Kea is taller measured from its base on the sea floor.
- Lowest: Challenger Deep, about 11 km down in the Pacific — deep enough to swallow Everest with room to spare. On land, the Dead Sea shore.
- Coldest: Vostok Station, Antarctica, at minus 89°C — cold enough that steel turns brittle.
- Records depend on how you measure — "highest above sea level" and "tallest base to peak" crown different mountains, which is a scientist's kind of argument.
Teach it today — no prep
The records ladder. Write the record-holders on cards — Everest, Mauna Kea, Challenger Deep, the Dead Sea, Vostok, the Greenland ice sheet — and have the class arrange them on the wall from highest to lowest before revealing the numbers. The Everest-vs-Mauna-Kea argument is the best part: make both sides defend their measurement.
