Layers of the Atmosphere
The Aurora Ceiling is guttering like a candle — and a glow like that belongs to one layer of the sky and no other. Put every layer back where it goes and the light steadies.
What you're training for
Under the Aurora Ceiling, the room goes black every time the light dims. It holds steady for whoever can match each layer of the atmosphere to what happens there. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.
The science
- Troposphere: the bottom layer, where clouds and all our weather happen — and where we live.
- Stratosphere: above the weather, where jets cruise in smooth air and the ozone layer shields us.
- Mesosphere: where most meteors burn up — every shooting star is this layer at work.
- Thermosphere: where the aurora glows and the space station orbits. The sky is a stack, and each floor has its own job.
Teach it today — no prep
The sky skyscraper. Tape four paper strips up the wall as floors of a building. The class assigns each resident its floor: clouds, a jet, a shooting star, the aurora. Then quiz in reverse — "where does a weather balloon give up?" — and let students argue floor by floor.
