Moon Phases
The moon-crystal over the Mirror Lake is stuck at full, and nothing in the Realm can tell what night it is. Half the Moon is always lit — what changes is how much of that half we see.
What you're training for
At the Mirror Lake, the month has stopped. It starts running again for whoever can order the Moon's phases from new to last quarter. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.
The science
- The Moon takes about a month to travel around Earth.
- The Sun always lights half of it — the Moon has no dark side, just a side we're not seeing.
- As the Moon moves, we see more or less of that lit half: new (none), first quarter (half), full (all), last quarter (half again).
- The classic mistake: phases are not Earth's shadow. The shadow only touches the Moon during an eclipse — a different lesson entirely.
Teach it today — a lamp and a ball
Orbit your own moon. Lamp on in a dark room. Each student holds a ball at arm's length and turns slowly in place — the lit part of the ball grows and shrinks through every phase, seen from their own head as Earth. (The cookie version — twisting sandwich cookies into phases — remains the most-remembered science lesson in any school year.)
