Eclipse Chase
A lightless cavern where one shaft of daylight sweeps the floor like a giant sundial, a glowing moon-crystal crosses the ceiling at night, and a black mirror lake doubles the whole sky. Six stops, six problems to put right, six Digs to recover. Free, no logins, no accounts. Led by Skyling, the Realm's hero Adventureling.
Assigning one stop
- Every stop has its own address. Stop 4 is
/pages/eclipse-chase#stop-4— paste it straight into Google Classroom. - Progress is remembered on the device, so a class can do one stop a week and pick up where it left off.
- Each stop runs 10–15 minutes. The finale needs all six done first.
The six stops
1. Dusk HollowEarth spins once every 24 hours. Your side turns toward the Sun for day, then away from it for night. The Sun is not moving around us.2. The Star CeilingA constellation is a pattern people picked out of the stars, and sailors steered by them. One star, Polaris, sits almost above the North Pole, so it stays put while the rest wheel around it.3. The Glass SkyStars make their own light. Planets and moons make none — they only shine because sunlight bounces off them. Stars look like tiny specks only because they are so far away.4. The Mirror LakeThe Moon takes about a month to travel around Earth. The Sun always lights up half of it. As the Moon moves, we see more or less of that lit half, and that is what makes the phases. It is not Earth's shadow.5. Eclipse GateIn a solar eclipse the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon's shadow falls on Earth. In a lunar eclipse Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, and Earth's shadow falls on the Moon.6. The Sundial FloorEarth is tilted on its axis. As Earth goes around the Sun, one half leans toward it for part of the year — long days, direct sunlight, summer. Six months later that half leans away and has winter. Earth is actually a little closer to the Sun in January, so distance is not what makes the seasons.
