The Sea Floor

Chomp Chasm is jammed shut and the sub can't get through. The floor opens for whoever can name its parts — because the sea floor has shapes with names, the same as dry land does.

What you're training for

At Chomp Chasm, the deepest cut in the Realm is crammed full of teeth. It opens for whoever can match each part of the sea floor to what it is. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.

The science

  • Continental shelf: the shallow, gently sloping floor near land — where most fishing and most sea life happens.
  • Abyssal plain: the wide, flat floor of the deep ocean — one of the flattest places on Earth.
  • Seamount: an underwater mountain; break the surface and it's an island — Hawaii is a chain of them.
  • Trench: the deepest cut of all, where one plate dives under another — the Mariana Trench could swallow Everest whole.

Teach it today — one shoebox

The hidden sea floor. Build a secret playdough seascape in a shoebox — shelf, plain, seamount, trench — lid on, with a row of holes. Students "sound" it with a skewer through each hole, record the depths, and graph the profile. Then open the box and compare the graph to the truth: they've just done real oceanography.

Trained and ready? Prove it at Stop 3 — Chomp Chasm. Free, no logins, progress saved on the device.
