Salt Water & Fresh Water
Pearl Grotto has clamped shut with a freshwater spring still running inside it. Salt water and fresh water are not the same water — and Earth holds far less of one than most people think.
What you're training for
At Pearl Grotto, the room-sized shell only opens when every water is told apart: salt, frozen fresh, and liquid fresh. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.
The science
- Almost all of Earth's water — about 97% — is salt water in the ocean.
- Most of the fresh water is frozen in ice caps and glaciers, out of reach.
- Only a small sliver of all Earth's water is liquid fresh water — rivers, lakes and underground — and that sliver is what every land plant, animal and person drinks.
- Which is why protecting fresh water matters: the ocean is vast, but the drinkable part of Earth's water is precious and small.
Teach it today — one litre of water
The whole world in a jug. A litre of water is all Earth's water. Pour out about 30 mL — that's all the fresh water. Freeze-tag two-thirds of that (about 20 mL) as ice caps. What's left — roughly a tablespoon — is every river, lake and well on Earth. Nobody forgets the tablespoon.
