Ocean Zones

At the Twilight Drop the light quits far too soon. The ocean goes down in layers, each with less light than the one above — and they only stack one way.

What you're training for

At the Twilight Drop, the dark has been pulled up too high. A proper blue returns for whoever can stack the ocean's layers from surface to deepest. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.

The science

  • Sunlight zone: the bright top 200 metres — where nearly all the ocean's plants and most of its animals live.
  • Twilight zone: a faint blue glow, too dim for plants — home of huge daily animal migrations up and down.
  • Midnight zone: no sunlight at all, ever — cold, dark, and still full of life.
  • The trenches: the deepest water on Earth — deeper below the surface than Everest stands above it.

Teach it today — one strip of paper

The gradient ocean. Each student shades a tall paper strip from bright blue at the top through deep blue to black — then places animal cards where they belong: reef fish, lanternfish, anglerfish, tube worms. The colouring itself teaches the rule: light decides the layers, and the layers decide the life.
