Coral Reefs & Bleaching

The Sunken Reef used to be every colour there is. Now the top of it is bone white. Bringing a reef back means knowing what coral needs from what wrecks it.

What you're training for

At the Sunken Reef, the fish have moved out and the branches have gone white. Colour crawls back for whoever can sort what keeps coral healthy from what bleaches it. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.

The science

  • Coral is an animal — a colony of tiny polyps — with even tinier algae living inside it.
  • The algae make the coral's food and its colour; the coral gives the algae a home. It's a partnership.
  • Water that stays too warm for weeks drives the algae out — the coral turns white. That's bleaching: not dead yet, but starving.
  • Cool, steady, clear water that sunlight can reach lets the algae return — bleached reefs can recover if the heat breaks in time.

Teach it today — no prep

The reef partnership. One student is the coral (a home with arms), one is the algae (holds the "food" cards and the colour card). Warm the water — the algae walks out, taking food and colour with it. Ask the coral how long it can last alone. Then the class lists what has to change for the partner to come back.
