Bioluminescence

At the bottom of the Anglerfish Abyss no sunlight has ever arrived — and the only light that works down there is light an animal makes inside its own body.

What you're training for

In the Anglerfish Abyss, the one light has gone out and it is completely, flatly dark. The trench floor comes back up in cold light for whoever knows which light can actually work this deep. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.

The science

  • No sunlight reaches the deep ocean — below about 1,000 metres, none at all, ever.
  • The only light down there is bioluminescence: light animals make inside their own bodies with a chemical reaction — cold light, no heat.
  • Each glow has a job: the anglerfish's lure attracts prey, some shrimp flash to startle attackers, and some fish glow underneath to hide their silhouette.
  • Most animals of the deep sea can make light — in the largest habitat on Earth, glowing is normal and darkness is the exception.

Teach it today — one glow stick

Design a deep-sea glower. Darken the room and crack a glow stick — light with no bulb, no fire, no heat, like an anglerfish makes. Then each student designs a deep-sea creature whose glow has a job — lure, alarm, disguise or signal — and defends the design. Biology by invention.

Resources in this training center

Worksheets, reading passages, flashcards and printables for this lesson are being added — new resources land here first. Get one email a month when they do, or browse the whole free library.

The hands-on half: the Deep Sea Quest Adventure Kit puts six real specimens, six Digs, six Gemlings and the Realm map in your students' hands — $19.99, or $15 a student for classrooms. The rarest Gemling in the set glows in the dark.
