Weathering, Erosion & Deposition

Every pebble in Pebble Rapids got the same treatment: something broke it, something carried it, something dropped it. Those three jobs carved the whole canyon.

What you're training for

At Pebble Rapids, the river is dammed behind a wall of piled pebbles and climbing the bank. The dam comes apart for whoever can sort the three jobs — weathering, erosion, deposition. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.

The science

  • Weathering breaks rock apart where it sits — ice freezing in cracks, roots prying slabs, sand scouring surfaces.
  • Erosion carries the broken pieces away — rivers, wind, glaciers and gravity are the movers.
  • Deposition drops the pieces somewhere new — a slowing river drops its gravel; slowing wind builds a dune.
  • Break, carry, drop — in that order, over millions of years, is how a canyon gets carved and a delta gets built.

Teach it today — one box of sugar cubes

The three-job jar. Shake sugar cubes in a jar — corners round off and crumbs appear: weathering. Tip the crumbs down a tilted tray with a cup of water: erosion. Watch where the water slows and drops them: deposition. Three verbs the class just performed, in the right order.
