Soil Layers

A rockfall sliced the bank of Rockslide Ravine like a cake, and now you can see straight down through the soil. Every layer does a different job — name them and the bank goes back together.

What you're training for

At Rockslide Ravine, the torn bank shows a full soil profile. Packing it back together means matching each layer to what it is. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.

The science

  • Leaf litter sits on the surface — fallen leaves and twigs, the raw material of everything below.
  • Topsoil is dark and crumbly, packed with roots and rotted plant material — the layer food grows in.
  • Subsoil is paler clay, holding minerals washed down from above; roots reach it, worms rarely do.
  • Bedrock is the solid rock at the bottom — the parent that centuries of weathering slowly turn into new soil. An inch of topsoil can take hundreds of years to form.

Teach it today — one jar of dirt

Soil in a jar. Half-fill a clear jar with playground soil, top with water, shake hard, and let it stand overnight. It settles into visible layers — sand, silt, clay, with litter floating on top. Compare the jar to a drawn soil profile and label both. (The edible version — cookie crumbs, pudding, wafer bedrock — also has a 100% engagement rate.)
