A flood comes through this canyon every hundred years, and the bank above Scorpion Hollow is bare and crumbling. One thing will hold the soil when the water comes.

What you're training for

In Scorpion Hollow, the dust hangs thick and the bank is ready to wash away. Saving it means choosing what actually holds soil against moving water. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.

The science

  • Roots grip soil and hold it in place — a net of living anchors under every plant.
  • Bare, loose ground washes away fastest of all: nothing slows the water, nothing holds the grains.
  • Plants also soften the rain itself — leaves break the fall of drops before they can blast soil loose.
  • Farmers use the same science at field scale: cover crops, grass strips and terraces are all root-power against erosion. The Dust Bowl is what happens without it.

Teach it today — two trays and a jug

The rain test. Two tilted trays: one bare soil, one with grass (a slab of sod, or cress grown a week ahead). Pour the same "rain" down each and catch the runoff in clear cups. One cup runs brown, one nearly clear — students see the roots' grip in the water itself. Predict first, pour second.
