Clean Water & Natural Filters

The Clear Spring is running brown, fed by bare ground upstream. Water that soaks in comes out clean; water that runs across the top brings the dirt with it.

What you're training for

At the Clear Spring, the bottom of the pool has vanished under brown. It clears for whoever can sort where rain soaks in from where it runs off. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.

The science

  • Rain that soaks into the ground gets filtered by the soil — layer after layer of natural strainer — and comes out of springs clear.
  • Rain that runs across a hard surface — parking lots, rooftops, packed paths — picks up loose dirt and carries it straight into the water.
  • Forest floors, meadows and loose soil are the great soaker-inners; pavement is the great runner-offer.
  • This is why springs in forests run clear and ditches by roads run brown — the ground upstream decides the water downstream.

Teach it today — two cups and some soil

The soil filter. Two funnels over clear cups: one holds a coffee filter packed with soil, one is empty. Pour the same muddy water through both. The soil-filtered cup drips out visibly cleaner — the ground just cleaned the water, in front of the class. Then sort surface cards: soaks in, or runs off?
