Earth's Spheres

The Ice Cathedral is rock, water and living things packed into one freezing room — and the ice only lets go of the doors when each is sorted into its sphere.

What you're training for

In the Ice Cathedral, two of the three exits are sealed behind clear ice. They open for whoever can sort the room into geosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere. Train here first; prove it in the simulation.

The science

  • The geosphere is the rock and soil — the solid Earth, from sand grains to mountain ranges.
  • The hydrosphere is all the water: oceans, rivers, groundwater — and ice, which is why a glacier counts.
  • The biosphere is every living thing, from wall moss to arctic foxes to you.
  • The atmosphere is the envelope of air — and the spheres constantly interact: rain (hydro) carves rock (geo) that plants (bio) then root into.

Sphere I-spy. Look out the window and list three things per sphere — geo, hydro, bio, atmo — in four columns. Then the challenge round: find one thing happening right now that involves two spheres at once (a puddle soaking into dirt, a bird in the wind). Interactions are where the science lives.
