The Ultimate Treasure Hunt: Real Money Dig Kit
Beyond the Piggy Bank: Why Money is an Essential Teaching Tool
Money is an essential part of our daily lives, and it's important for children to learn about its value and how to manage it effectively. By using money as a teaching tool, parents and educators can help children develop important financial skills that will benefit them for a lifetime.
One way to use money as a teaching tool is to involve children in household budgeting. This can include creating a budget for groceries, entertainment, and other expenses, as well as tracking spending and saving over time. By involving children in this process, they can learn about the importance of budgeting, saving, and making wise financial decisions.
Another way to use money as a teaching tool is to encourage children to save their money for a specific goal. This could be a new toy, a special outing, or even a long-term savings goal like college or a car. By setting a savings goal and tracking progress over time, children can learn about the value of patience and delayed gratification, as well as the power of compound interest.
In addition to these practical lessons, money can also be used as a tool to teach children about important values like generosity and social responsibility. Encouraging children to donate a portion of their money to a charity or other worthy cause can help instill a sense of empathy and generosity, while also teaching them about the importance of giving back to their community.
Overall, using money as a teaching tool can be a powerful way to help children develop important financial skills and values that will benefit them throughout their lives. By involving children in household budgeting, encouraging them to save for a specific goal, and teaching them about generosity and social responsibility, parents and educators can help prepare children for a bright financial future.

Discover Hidden Riches with Our Real Money Excavation Kit
Excited to create your own real money dig kit? Great! We're here to guide you through the process step by step. In the following sections, we'll show you everything you need to create this exciting excavation activity at home, from the materials to the instructions. By the end of this guide, you'll have a fun and educational activity that your child will love. So let's get started!
Materials:
- Sand
- Plaster of Paris
- Water
- Mixing bowl
- Wooden spoon
- Measuring cups
- Spare change
- A container in which to pour the excavation. An old Altoids tin is a really cool choice but pretty much any plastic container will work.
- Excavation tools. Wooden dowels and other blunt instruments work well. Sharp tools are unsafe and not necessary as the excavations are reasonably brittle and excavate easily.
- Safety goggles
- Small brush
Subscribe to Excavating Adventures YouTube channel and enjoy our super easy and fun DIY excavation videos!
Instructions:
- Put one cup of sand in your mixing bowl.
- Add one-third cup Plaster of Paris.
- Use the wooden spoon to mix the sand and Plaster of Paris.
- Add one-third cup of water and mix.
- Keep adding small amounts of water until you reach a pancake like batter consistency.
- Add the spare change to the container.
- Pour a layer of the mixture into the container to cover the spare change.
- Gently tap the sides of the container to remove any air bubbles. This will also allow a little mixture under the spare change.
- If room permits, add another layer of spare change and cover with more mixture.
- Set the real money dig kit in a safe location to dry undisturbed overnight. I like to put the excavation in front of a fan.
Now the real money dig kit is ready to be enjoyed. Find an area that is easy to clean up, distribute the safety goggles and excavation tools, and let the excavating begin.
